Apple's official way: make a ringtone with GarageBand

There are quite a few steps, so you may want a family member to help. GarageBand is a free app made by Apple.

  1. First, make sure the ringtone file is on your phone. If you cut and saved it on DingSong yourself, it's already on your phone, so go on to the next step. If a family member sent it in a messaging app such as LINE, tap the file in the chat and choose save or download (on iPhone, it goes into the Files app).

  2. Open the "Files" app and tap "Browse" → "Downloads." If you can see the ringtone, you're all set.

Can't see "Downloads"? Tap "iCloud Drive" and look there.

  3. If GarageBand isn't on your phone, first download it for free from the "App Store" (it's Apple's app, not ours).

  4. On the Home Screen, touch and hold the GarageBand icon. When the menu appears, tap "Create New Audio Recording."

  5. Tap the "Tracks" button at the top of the screen, then tap the instrument icon on the left, and then tap the "Loops Browser" button at the top.

  6. Tap "Files" → "Browse items from the Files app," then find the ringtone you just downloaded.

  7. Touch and hold the ringtone and drag it into the "Tracks" view, all the way to the left, with no empty space before it.

If it gets cut short when you drag it in, set the song section length to "Automatic" and drag it again.

  8. Tap the "Navigation" button, then tap "My Songs.""My Songs."

  9. Tap the "More" button → "Select," then select the song you just made.

  10. Tap "Share""Share" → "Ringtone,""Ringtone," give it a name that's easy to recognize (like "Mom calling"), then tap "Export.""Export."

  11. Tap "Use sound as" → "Standard Ringtone."

  12. Ask a family member to call you and check that it's this song.

iOS 26 and later: set it directly from the "Files" app

This works only if your phone's "iOS Version" is 26 or later. You can check it in "Settings" → "General" → "About." This faster method was described by tech news sites outside Apple; Apple's user guide doesn't cover it yet. Button names may differ from what's shown here. If you can't find them, use the method above.

  1. First, make sure the ringtone file is on your phone. If you cut and saved it on DingSong yourself, it's already on your phone, so go on to the next step. If a family member sent it in a messaging app such as LINE, tap the file in the chat and choose save or download (on iPhone, it goes into the Files app).

  2. Open the "Files" app → "Browse" → "Downloads," and tap the ringtone.

  3. Tap "Share," then scroll down to the ringtone option, "Use as Ringtone."

  4. Your phone opens "Settings." If this ringtone has a check mark, you're done.

  5. Ask a family member to call you and check that it's this song.
